Preservice Teachers’ Criticality in Analysing School English Teaching Materials: Gender Representation and Islamic Perspective

This article reports on teacher trainees’ ability in doing a critical analysis of an extract English teaching materials from gender perspective. The was prompted using textbook that generated two issues, namely woman-man relationship and the position women occupational discourse. participants were 38 trainees enrolled subject Department college regional Indonesia. research data results mid-term test, designed with explicit instruction to ascertain afore-mentioned elements, their final exam implied discern same elements. analysed qualitatively by interpreting participants’ responses based degree criticality. test show more than half them about relationship, while only 18% at work. demonstrate significant downturn thinking performances. Only 15% criticized 13% problematized These findings raise concerns level criticality so systematic efforts sharpen analytical should be further attempted.
